Your friend, Joel

Friday, July 4

<joel>  hey all, here's my Friday Five on this rather gloomy-looking Friday - but it's July 4th, at least that's good for the Americans... then again I couldn't give less of a damn about the Americans right now, even though we're constantly submerged in their culture. anyway - not the time for a rant, time for my F.F.:

1. What were your favorite childhood stories?
Oh, I was an avid little reader back in the late 80's/early 90's - Buttercup the Cow (I think that was what the title was) was the book with which I learned to read, basically - other favorites, such as the 'Little Critter' series, I read a lot of Highlights magazines, oh! can't forget the Playboy magazines in daddy's bedroom! lol j/k

2. What books from your childhood would you like to share with [your] children?
I'd personally like to pass on something not necessairily (I spelled that wrong) an educational value, but an emotional value as well. we read books because we get something from it, like a sense of exhiliration or a joy - well I want to teach that at a young age so my kids aren't glued to the T.V. or computer screen all day.

3. Have you re-read any of those childhood stories and been surprised by anything?
oh, you mean the big subliminal killing images found in Little Critter? ah, no. I was, however, surprised with some of the little storybooks I made up when I was five years old that was all about pointless crap yet actually pretty good for a 5-year-old. I mean, a story about flags that basically consisted of piss-poor drawings with the captions (This is are flag. That is NOT are flag!) doesn't sound too... eh, exciting, I know - but hey. I was five.

4. How old were you when you first learned to read?
5 was the big literary year in my life.

5. Do you remember the first 'grown-up' book you read? How old were you?
I think I was about 7 or 8 when I read 'Number The Stars', which had a slightly adult theme. Now I've read things like "A Fine Balance," Dean Koontz, Steven King, "The Bluest Eye," man - lots of books.

Thursday, July 3

<joel>  Allright well it's a Thursday morning - here's an outline (summer brings textual and literary laziness on my part) of my past number of days (starting at Sunday night - but I'll probably have memory lapses so bear with me.) on Sunday Night I did the best 5-miler of my life - 41:54, which I think is pretty darn good for a partial beginner. after that I came home, collapsed on my bed and slept (but I took a shower for hygiene reasons.) on Monday (June 30) it was kind of a depressing day because Peter Pan was finished with, but I went to work from 11-2 at least, and then came home and chilled. then that night I was planning to maybe go shop with my mom or something, (no, not for trendy accessories but for a bike for Ben, goddamnit! lol) but then I got this random call from Mariel that basically said "get your ass over here. now." so I walked to her house as fast as I could and met halfway Alicia and Mariel - Mariel was trying to rollerblade. so yeah, we ended up walking all over hell, so-to-speah - we ended up visiting a few people - like Sarah, for example. and then we went down to Bulk Barn (after abusing Alicia's friend at Esso) to get some snacks - I didn't need them, but oh well. then Alicia and Mariel went to Syd's while I went to seaside park and just sat there (sounds creepy, but I could hear the sea amidst the fog) and it was nice. so then I ended up hanging out at Syd's for a while before going home. then Tuesday... well, Canada day - I went to New River for the day with my family and Marissa, and that night I went to go see the fireworks uptown - it was a good patriotic day. then yesterday, I went to Moncton all day - we went to The Running Room, Mike's, Crystal Palace - things like that. it was random (I didn't find out that I was going until Tuesday night) yet good. then I went to work from 5-11 last night, where I learned front cash. I think I screwed up a few things... but I lived. anyway, then today I'm going camping at one and I should be back tommorrow morning or so - and tommorrow night I'm going to go with Alicia (this is something we've been planning for quite a while) to do a bit of shopping!! (manly stuff - like manly shoes and manly hygiene products and stuff.... lol) so yeah, that's that - annnd shout out's back up!

Peace out,
Canada 2010.

Monday, June 30

<joel>  hey all! I had one of the most amazing weekends of my life, and Peter Pan is basically the two words that could describe the experience (Pool noodles! Mad cows! Sick 'n' gay! Ping ping! Aha!!... Be right back... Hey! There's someone in that box!) since September and it was a wonderful, awesome experience and I'm so glad I did it. anyway so here's an e-mail I sent to Jessica that describes Sunday. I'm working today - and Shout Outs are not!

yeeeah - that's definately one big-ass e-mail right there. here's my sunday - I got up at around 9:30, showered and went off to church for 11:00am (it was very very hot, though.) then we had this new priest who very much enjoyed singing every possible thing so we were there until 12:05pm or so... then we went down to my grandmother's house for lunch, (and my aunt, uncle and my cousin (their daughter) live in her basement, it's a big house) and they were at the Imperial to watch me on Saturday night and they were absolutely enchanted by it all - I was right happy about that. (my cousin who lives there, Makayla, a 4-year-old little girl, kept on asking my aunt why that girl (Jen, who played Mrs. Darling) didn't know my real name (she called me George, my character's name.) lol so I thought that was kinda cute. then my other cousin Raquel stopped by (she's studying @ UNBSJ in nursing) and we talked for a while. (she lives in Peru.) so yeah! then we (my family) went to Dominian Park, (which is right close to my grandmother's house) for a second before my mom had to drive me to my cast party. there I ate lots of food (shame on me,) signed a LOT of posters (just because I'm Mr. Darling, lol) and had a lot of fun. but then after the cast party I felt right bad because it was all done... I mean I've been in it since September... what will I ever do with my Sundays?? anyway then me and my family had supper, then went to McDo for some sundaes (you may now yell: hick!!!) lol but we only did it so ben could go in the retarded play place... anyway, then I came home, talked to my pal Alicia for a while (she was on a camping trip for the last week and we're tight) and then I went downstairs and watched "About Schmidt" with my family, it was actually very good. anyway that's my sunday, I'm too lazy to write anything else, but write me back! I'm working today... joy... aiight bye!

Now that the fun is over,
The fun won't end. </joel> <!--21:33-->

Sunday, June 29

<joel>  here is my late Friday Five, and don't miss the second (and final) adaptation of the Interaction Theatre Company's play Peter Pan tonight!

1. How are you planning to spend the summer [winter]?
Working @ Wendy's, going to the beach, hopefully doing Summer Arts Été, hanging out, socialising - but first I have to get this big thing (P.P.) out of my way.

2. What was your first summer job?
Well my first job was a paperboy - fun stuff.

3. If you could go anywhere this summer [winter], where would you go?
I'd love to go to New York and do stuff there.

4. What was your worst vacation ever?
Probably my Baie des Chaleurs vacation of last summer (summer of 2002) because I missed my g/f (at the time,) it was boring and our camper got all screwed up and stuff.

5. What was your best vacation ever?
New Hampshire in 1995-(or 1996, I'm not sure.) It was really amazing, we met this family from Vermont and even though it was like 7 or 8 years ago, it's still memorable in my mind.

P.S. I'd put an address followed by a Shout Out, but they're (the shout outs) not working right now... so until l8er!
